Fighting the Game of Life
A Day of Hope with Crazy About Sports
We celebrated the "Day of Hope" last February 18, 2023, bringing together laughter and stories of resilience. We spotlighted the achievements of the young women and girls who shared inner strength in overcoming adversity. They showcased their best karate fighting form this year.
"Before, it was easy to quit school. Now, we have become more focused on finishing what we have started," says Cassie, who apprenticed with a famous chef before graduating with a degree in Hotel and Hospitality.
"In the past, I thought that losing in the game of life was normal. I believe now that we can win through determination," says Sitti, who graduated as a teacher this year.
"Before, we fought our battles alone. We are now working as a team by supporting each other," the girls reflected as they concluded the Day of Hope with a friendly tennis tournament.
Crazy About Sports was made possible through VF Bay Angels in San Francisco Bay, California, led by Veronica Garcia and Spencer Meneses, complimented by Manila Angels, led by Rod Claudio who also provided gym equipment from Toby's Sports, Sports Resources, Inc., and JK Fitness, and Jumbing De Rosas who sponsors the Karate program of the survivors.
This year, a Dr. Larry and Girija Brilliant fund will start focusing on giving specialized vocational training opportunities linkage for graduates to employment.
Today, the program transcends giving educational assistance to include new sports programs. Initially centered around tennis, the program has evolved into "Crazy About Sports.
The girls are learning and applying sports principles in the game of life.
